HAWKS, DOVES...LET'S TALK TURKEY.
Here's a maxim I learned many years ago: make thinks as simple as possible, but not simpler. I was always offended with the "axis of evil" rhetoric for that reason, Saddam's Iraq was a unique challenge that had to be confronted by force; the Baath Party, founded in 1943 with Nazi and Vichy help in the Levant, has nurtured several quasi-fuerers, but Saddam was the real deal. No other totalitarian combined the meglomania, sadism, paranoia, bloodlust and sense of messianic destiny in modern times. Thats why I reluctantly supported his overthrow while I would hesitate to disturb Kim from his porn collection or the ayatollas in their villas. If Ezra has to consider that turning chicken so be it.

I'm relatively new to this site, but I assume Rick was a McCain supporter as I was in 2000, and hardly a prison bitch to the socialcons that derailed McCain's campaign. Sometimes I wonder how much better this country would be if we had gone with McCain eight years ago - imagine it, a President that could acually communicate our values and aspirations to people, instead of putting nitwits like Scott McClellan [Flounder from Animal House] out to tell our side of the story.

The only light I see at the end of this tunnel is maybe Fred Thompson will be able to pick up McCain's mantle and present a more human face.

The first question JFK was asked when he announced his candidacy was "will you accept the vp spot?" Obama may have a lot of problems, but being non-specific [which might bother us wonks as vagueness] is not going to hurt him with people thirsting for change.

Remember the film The Untouchables? Connery's character says when all the apples in the barrel are rotten the only alternative is to go to the orchard... I agree the current bipartisan collection of thieves and reprobates running our country breaks my heart, and I say this as a man who until recently saw John McCain, for all his flaws, as a potential vindicator of our philosophy. Now I don't know what to do other than play craps with the future and hope for the best. Obama is pretty much a blank slate, he was a standard lib in his twenties but sounds like he might be capable of growth at 45... if we could get him to commit to mainstream judicial picks I don't think any of the Repubs running could be any worse for the country, and he might be able to heal a lot of the BDS damage that's made terrorists chic.

I think you've mislabled your blog if you think the Governator is the ideal candidate. I'm a Repub of the McCain/Schwartzenegger stripe myself and can't get over the rabid hostility these men generate amoung the true right wing nuts -- Rush Limbaugh would vote for Ward Churchill before he'd consider voting for McCain, for example. Romney might beat Hillary on a good night, but against Obama I think our only chance is McCain. The others have too much baggage [Rudy] or are too much like Bush - but convincing our primary voters of that fact is going to be tough.

I think a lassez faire attitude towards illegal immigration does attract a more aggressive, criminal element than we would have with legal immigration increases. They are already a self-selected subset of the population - those that are willing to ignore inconvenient laws. I also don't see why immigration issues are required to be bound to bailing out Mexico with it's dysfunctional institutions. If we tripled legal immigration with some sort of rational priorities, i.e., English language proficiency or education requirements or willingness to return to the home country after two years, the current tidal wave of Hispanics would be replaced by Indians or Bangladeshis willing to follow our rules for a lower rate of pay -- they would also want to come because young men outnumber women 3 to 1 [due to gender selective abortions] in the home country.
